TEST-1

Section A: Reading                                                    20 marks

1. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow.

1 Papaya is the healthiest fruit with a list of properties that is long and
exhaustive. Papaya favours digestion as well as cures skin irritation and
sunburns. You can munch on it as a salad, have it cooked or boiled, or
just drink it as milkshake or juice. The most important of these virtues is
the protein-digesting enzyme in the milky juice. The enzyme is similar to
pepsin in its digestive action and is said to be so powerful that it can
digest 200 times its own weight in protein. It assists the body in
assimilating the maximum nutritional value from food to provide energy
and bodybuilding materials.

2 Papain in raw papaya makes up for the deficiency of gastric juice and
fights excessive unhealthy mucus in the stomach, dyspepsia and intestinal
irritation. The ripe fruit, if eaten regularly, corrects habitual constipation,
bleeding piles and chronic diarrhoea.

3 The juice, used as a cosmetic, removes freckles or brown spots due to
exposure to sunlight and makes the skin smooth and delicate. A paste of
papaya seeds is applied on skin diseases like those caused by ringworms.
The black seeds of the papaya are highly beneficial in the treatment of
cirrhosis of the liver caused by malnutrition, alcoholism etc.

4 A tablespoon of its juice, combined with a pint of fresh lime juice, should
be taken once or twice daily for a month. The fresh juice of raw papaya
mixed with honey can be applied over inflamed tonsils, for diphtheria and
other throat disorders. It dissolves the membrane and prevents the
infection from spreading.

5 The nutrients in papaya have also been shown to be helpful in the
prevention of colon cancer. Papaya's fibre is able to control cancer-
causing toxins in the colon and keep them away from the healthy colon
cells. In addition, papaya's folate, vitamin C, beta-carotene, and vitamin E
have each been associated with a reduced risk of colon cancer. These
nutrients provide synergistic protection for colon cells from free radical
damage to their DNA. Increasing your intake of these nutrients by
enjoying papaya is an especially good idea for individuals at risk of colon
cancer.

2. Read the passage given below.

1 With the advancement of technology and medicines, we have become
great at diagnosing a disease and interpreting reports, but what’s left
behind is finding ways to prevent and heal. In other words, we follow a
system of disease management instead of disease resolution, an attempt
to survive instead of thrive.

2 It’s important to plug this gap. We need to follow a system that takes
care of health at the root level. We thrive when we live within the
parameters defined by nature. This simply means that when we align the
way we eat, think, sleep and move with nature, we get closer to good
health.

3 Nature has all the answers and cures when it comes to healing, be it a
case of arthritis, obesity, diabetes, auto immunity or even cancer. By
aligning our approach with nature, we allow our body to use its natural
intelligence called immunity.

4 Eat foods that nature intended you to eat. This means anything
unprocessed, unrefined, wholesome or raw is good for health. Fresh and
local fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, pure oils, whole grains make the best
healing food choices. Use of chemical-free farming practices like vermi
compost, earthworms or homemade compost also makes a huge
difference when it comes to aligning with natural practices.

5 Similarly, align your food schedule as per nature. Eat when you are
hungry and fast when you are not. Force feeding, bingeing, eating with
guilt and without hunger goes against nature’s will.

6 Even 10 minutes spent in nature is healing for the body. Humans have
been designed to move. Taking inspiration from animals and children,
move when your body is allowing you to and rest when your body isn’t.
Prefer exercises that promote natural movement like walking, jogging,
jumping, skipping, climbing, playing with soil, hiking and dancing. Any
deviation from that can be harmful in the long run.

7 Every living being is naturally wired to the biological clock and has a
particular circadian rhythm. Our bodies have been designed to be awake
in the morning and asleep at night. Any deviation from our biological
clock can lead to suffering.

8 Don’t get bogged down with too many things. Nature doesn’t hurry, yet
accomplishes it all. Acceptance, letting go and moving on, innocence,
patience, obedience are some of the powerful things that nature teaches
us.

9 There is no one method of healing. There are many out there, provided
we are open to the gifts of nature. Trust and believe in its magic and
power to heal and prevent.

2.1 On the basis of your reading the passage, answer any four of the
